For anyone with no historical background on this matter let's take shallow dive into what led to said war.
In around 1857 a new constitution was enacted that limited the power of the Catholic church and making all the churches property, property of the state. Even though it was poorly enforced, nevertheless it bothered the church establishment.
In 1917 a new version of the Constitution was enacted and this time established more strict boundaries making more clear the separation of church and state. This time the clergy was banned from voting or running for office, the education was declared secular in private and public schools, talking about politics from the pulpit was banned and any religious events in outside the church were prohibited. This created big tension between the church and the state. In the mid 1920's the tensions scalated and the message from the church to the parishioners was "The government wants to take away your religion and the Virgin from you" the people took their guns and started a guerilla led by the Catholic Church against the government and that's how the bloody "Cristeros war" started.
The modern day USA
The United States has been a very religious nation. There are many signs that show how the separation between state and religion is just symbolic. They have a Chaplan in Congress for every chamber, the president has a religious counselor, every elected official swears on the bible, etc, etc, etc. nevertheless the destiny of the country because more entangled with the church from Ronald Reagan forward. Since then, every political candidate has seek the approval of the evangelical church and the government policies have become more radical to align with that branch of the religious establishment.
Unlike the Mexican conflict, in the United States the religious establishment has been claiming prosecution but not from the government, but from the citizens that want more strict boundaries between the church and the government. The right wing of the Government and the church have formed an alliance to fight what is called the "left" to suppress their voice, to impose more laws aligned with the church points of view and to remove any laws that might pose a treat to the "freedom of religion". In this endeavor, the religious establishment has found support from all the branches of the government including the supreme court.
As I write this, the President of the United States and the secretary of defense have called for the deployment of the army to the be deployed again "the left".
Long ago, when I thought about the similarities between the Mexican past and the United States present, I never thought it would develop so fast... Even couple weeks ago it didn't seemed real in the short term... Now, things have changed and we might see a civil war or a revolution soon than expected.a
